POLITICAL CARREER:
• Member of Indian Parliament continuously since 1989
• Served four times as minister in the Indian government, as environmental minister in 1989, as Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, and Minister for Culture. She successfully lead a new Indian pension reforms effort.
• Chairwoman of the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) 1995
• Founded the organisation People for Animals in 1992, the largest organisation for animal rights/welfare in India
