The social worker job description is one which encompasses many different responsibilities. For individuals who are looking to get into the trade of social work, they need to understand the requirements that will be asked of them. Many people look at the job of helping others in a romantic and charitable sense. However in addition to this top level of the job the entire social worker job description needs to be considered. Individuals need to look at whether they can handle the specific duties that will be asked of them.

Social workers in a general sense work with people who are in some form of turmoil or who have been excluded socially. The purpose of the role is to provide assistance and support to the individuals in need. This is done with the goal of rehabilitating individuals to aid themselves in their recovery and get back on their feet again. The role is a personal one but has to keep a formal distance, this is one of the key elements of the social worker job description. It is like being an objective professional friend. You provide what support is needed but do not get overly subjective and involved with the personal issues. This may mean that your job goals and perceptions are altered beyond what the job description requires.

Social workers are usually government employed and can work in a number of different contexts. This can include schools, hospitals, prisons, care homes and other government affiliates organizations. The clients that social workers interact with are commonly younger people and their families. This can be from a number of reasons from bullying and depression to non-attendance at school or drug and alcohol problems. Social workers also deal with the elderly and people with mental health issues. The duties encompass a large range of things and so workers need to be versatile and adaptable.

The day to day job roles can vary greatly. This could be writing up regular mental health assessment to be passed on to a medical professional. Or hosting interviews with disrupted families and try and resolve problems through long term structured progression. Other activities may involve making appointments with employment agencies or organizing a client’s finances for them. Some people need the support to help them do the menial things that depression or illness can suppress. It is all about doing whatever can be done to help people in need be nurtured and healed.

In order to meet the criteria set out in a social worker job description an individual needs a certain set of skills. These are very important and include patience, empathy, good will and control. Without these the strains of the job will probably become too much. Being a social worker is not suited for those just looking for a job; you need an active passion for caring for those in need.
